Cracow +Wieliczka Salt Mine
one-day trip from Zakopane
Kraków is one of the oldest cities in our country, a former capital of Poland with a history spanning over a thousand years. It attracts with its wealth of monuments and unique atmosphere. The centuries-old past permeates almost every corner of the city, which is one of the oldest centers in Poland. It is here that kings once walked and the culture of our country flourished. To experience this, one need only stroll along the most famous and, at the same time, the most beautiful route in Kraków - the Royal Route, which runs from the Barbican through the Market Square to Wawel, a true gem among Polish monuments. On Wawel Hill, there are relics from the beginnings of the Polish state, as the history of Wawel is inextricably linked to the origins of our nationhood.
We will start our tour of Krakow from Wawel Hill, which is a Polish national and cultural symbol. The Wawel Cathedral plays a particularly significant role in the history of the Polish State, having served as the church for Polish rulers for four hundred years. Starting with Władysław Łokietek, all Polish kings were crowned in the Wawel Cathedral, except for Stanisław Leszczyński and Stanisław August Poniatowski. The Cathedral is also the burial site of the most prominent Polish national heroes.
From Wawel, we will walk through All Saints Square, along Bradzka or Grocka Street to the Main Market Square, which was the largest market in medieval Europe. In the Main Market Square, we will see the most characteristic monuments of Krakow, such as: the Cloth Hall, the monument to Adam Mickiewicz, the Town Hall Tower, and the old tenements located around the square. We will also visit St. Mary's Basilica (for those interested), famous for its beautiful Gothic altar by master Wit Stwosz. From the church tower, we will hear the Hejnał Mariacki, played every hour. Everyone will have free time in the square, and then we will return through the Florian Gate to Matejko Square, where we will finish the tour.
The Salt Mine in Wieliczka is one of the most valuable monuments in Poland, attracting over a million tourists from around the world each year. The history of the mine dates back to the 13th century. It is the only continuously operating mining site in the world, from the Middle Ages to the present day. In 1978, the Wieliczka Salt Mine and Wawel Castle, along with the Old Town and the monuments of Kazimierz, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
