Cracow +Wieliczka Salt Mine
day trip from Zakopane
Kraków is one of the oldest cities in our country, a former capital of Poland with a history spanning over a thousand years. It attracts visitors with its wealth of monuments and unique atmosphere. The centuries-old past permeates almost every corner of the city, which is one of the oldest centers in Poland. It is here that kings once walked and the culture of our country flourished. To experience this, one only needs to stroll along the most famous and beautiful route in Kraków - the Royal Route, which runs from the Barbican through the Main Square to Wawel, a true gem among Polish monuments. On Wawel Hill, there are relics from the beginnings of the Polish state, as the history of Wawel is inextricably linked to the origins of our nationhood.
We will start our tour of Krakow at Wawel Hill, which is a symbol of Polish national and cultural identity. The Wawel Cathedral plays a particularly important role in the history of the Polish State, having served as the church for Polish rulers for four hundred years. Beginning with Władysław Łokietek, all Polish kings were crowned in the Cathedral at Wawel, except for Stanisław Leszczyński and Stanisław August Poniatowski. The Cathedral is also the burial place of the most distinguished Polish national heroes.
From Wawel, we will walk through the All Saints Square, along Bradzka or Grocka Street to the Main Market Square, which was the largest market in medieval Europe. At the Main Market Square, we will see the most characteristic monuments of Krakow, such as: the Cloth Hall, the monument of Adam Mickiewicz, the Town Hall Tower, and the old tenement houses situated around the square. We will also visit St. Mary's Basilica (for those interested), which is famous for its beautiful Gothic altar by master Wit Stwosz. From the church tower, we will hear the Hejnał mariacki, played every hour. Everyone will have free time at the square, and then we will return through the Florian Gate to Matejko Square, where we will conclude the tour.
The Salt Mine in Wieliczka is one of the most valuable monuments in Polish lands, visited by over a million tourists from around the world each year. The history of the mine dates back to the 13th century. It is the only continuously operating mining site in the world, from the Middle Ages to the present day. In 1978, the Salt Mine in Wieliczka, along with Wawel Castle, the Old Town, and the monuments of Kazimierz, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The guide will take us through breathtaking underground chambers, saline lakes, and we will visit the majestic St. Kinga's Chapel with its unique salt sculptures. We will learn about the history of the mine and how its current image was formed.
125 meters underground is the Miners' Tavern, which will be the last stop before we return to the surface.
