The site is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The grounds of the largest Nazi extermination camp in Auschwitz have become a symbol of the Holocaust and are now fully accessible to visitors. To properly understand this place, it is necessary to visit both parts of the camp - Auschwitz and Birkenau.
AUSCHWITZ is a symbol of terror and genocide. It was established by the Germans in mid-1940 on the outskirts of Oświęcim. Initially, it served as a place of detention mainly for Poles as political prisoners. From 1942 onwards, it became one of the centers for the final solution of the Jewish question, the German plan to exterminate Jews living in the occupied territories. Over 1.1 million people lost their lives in Auschwitz.
BIRKENAU, located in nearby Brzezinka, was created for the mass extermination of Jews. Rows of wooden barracks, where prisoners were held, can be seen on a vast area. There are also ruins of gas chambers with crematoria, which were hastily dismantled by the Germans towards the end of the war.
Market Square
Oświęcim began to take shape at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, with most of the buildings initially being wooden. The main market square, which exists today, was laid out in the 14th century. A few years ago, it underwent a profound revitalization, allowing it to regain its pre-war character. The atmosphere of historic buildings has been emphasized, including the Ślebarski tenement, which resembles a spacious two-story palace. It stands next to the former "Herz" hotel, where Józef Piłsudski stayed on February 7, 1915. Information boards highlighting the most important events in the history of Oświęcim have been placed on benches on both sides of the market square.
